  • We are thrilled to announce our New Jersey SCBWI Annual Summer Conference will be held in New Brunswick on June 1 + 2, 2019. Save the date on your calendars now! Work on your portfolios and manuscripts so your work will be in the best shape possible when presenting to editors, agents, and art directors!
  • The NJ SCBWI chapter is looking for a new logo and we would like you to design it. Some things to keep in mind when designing the logo: Keep it clear and simple, but clever and unique. In keeping with the official SCBWI logo which features a kite, we'd like to maintain the kite theme in some form. It does not have to be overt. Feel free to browse online and see what other chapters of SCBWI have done with their logos to make them unique to their country or state. And remember, we are New Jersey! Cost: FREE! The challenge is open to all current NJ SCBWI illustrator members (published and not). Deadline: Entries should be emailed by 9 pm on March 15, 2019  Technical Requirements: The logo should be submitted as a JPG. Limit file size for submission to 2MB, but make sure you have a large hi-res file on hand. The Logo Design Needs To: • Capture the unique identity of our region • Include the words “SCBWI New Jersey” and include a kite • Be adaptable for both print and digital/online use • Be readable at various sizes-from a very small size (eg. on a button) or large (poster size) • The artist should submit a max 2MB jpg for the contest judging process-but be able to provide either a vector art file or a high-resolution layered photoshop file, with any text on a separate layer. Formatting: Since we need a circular format for social media profile icons and a horizontal banner for social media headers, artists can suggest multiple versions for various applications. NJ SCBWI reserves the right to tweak the winning logo to fit various digital and print applications. NJ SCBWI also reserves the right to adjust the typeface if the winning entry excels at illustration, but needs a nudge with typography. Logo usage: • The designer will grant permission for unlimited use. • The designer's name will be acknowledged on our website. • The winning logo will be used thereafter on all materials and social media. Submission Requirements: Email jpg to newjersey-ic@scbwi.org. Be sure to include

Utah/South Idaho: Picturing Your Next Picture Book, from Proposal through Publication

Webinar with Chronicle Books Senior Editor Naomi Kirsten

Saturday, February 23rd, 2019 @ 10:00 am – 12:00 pm Mountain Standard Time

$15 for Members, $30 for Non-members

Register herehttps://utahsouthidaho.scbwi.org/events/webinar-senior-editor-naomi-kirsten-of-chronicle-books/

Webinar Summary:

How do you increase your chances of getting published? It helps to have a strong manuscript, a compelling pitch, and, yes, a window into an editor’s thought process. This content-rich webinar will tackle all three of these considerations and more, guiding attendees through the development of a successful picture book pitch all the way through the development process en route to publication, giving illuminating glimpses into what a children’s book editor is thinking along the way. During this two-hour webinar, Naomi Kirsten will also walk webinar attendees through select picture books that she has developed with authors and illustrators at Chronicle Books.

Webinar objectives: — Gain a deeper understanding of the acquisition process. What is Chronicle Books looking for when considering a picture book manuscript? — Walk through the publication process once a picture book manuscript is acquired by a publisher like Chronicle Books. — Undertake a deep dive of three published picture books, from the original pitch through the development process to publication. — Unpack key Children’s book trends and themes that have endured for the past decade, while examining emerging trends. — Explore the non-fiction picture book opportunities for first-time authors.

Nebraska: E.B. Lewis: Keepin' It Real!

Researching for Authenticity in Picture Books.

E.B.'s webinar was so jam-packed full of useful, actionable information that we wanted to be sure everyone who wants the opportunity to watch it gets to do so. I'm not even an illustrator, and the webinar really resonated with me.

Highlights:

• Setting and location--how to get it right • Finding authentic clothing • Use of models (and how to find people willing to model for you)

The replay will be available until February 10, if you would be interested in sharing with your members. They can find more information and register here.
