Spend a day with Author-Illustrator Mike Malbrough as he leads emerging illustrators through the ins and outs of style-development, visual problem solving  and presenting work in the Kid Lit industry.







With topics ranging from the types of books and paper to use for your portfolio to getting the most out of every image you create, Mike will help new and seasoned illustrators alike make strides towards their professional and creative goals.

($25 for SCBWI members/$50 NON-members)













Mike's debut picture book 'Marigold Bakes a Cake' came out in July 2017 and he is represented by Lori Kilkelly from Rodeen Literary. Mike has worn many hats including: freelance graphic designer, comic book artist, performer and teacher with a career spanning two decades. He is the director of ORNG Ink, an  after-school studio for young artists, and he has received several awards and honors for his work in the community with children and teens.  You can find more of his work at:                                         

Portfolio Preparation and the Path to Representation and Publication






Mike will discuss the basic elements necessary for a solid portfolio, and what you need in your back pocket. He will share some thoughts on how to display your work, common mistakes artists make, and stories about his journey from un-agented newbie to his first two-book deal and follow up work. Q&A to follow. 

Lunch on your own – lots of restaurants, diners and deli's within 5 min. walking distance of library in downtown Maplewood center.

Mike will share ways to strengthen your portfolio and individual style through self-critique and exploration.

Round Table Workspace
During a time of discussion, sharing, planning and creating, participants will help one another prepare their work, overcome obstacles and develop their visual voice. Mike will be available for one-on-one or group discussions.
